About us

TLU Press, a division of Tallinn University, is a publisher of academic and intellectual literature. Since its inception, the intent of Tallinn University has been to gather and transmit vital, relevant knowledge, and to support its community of academics and students. The main goals of TLU Press are to tap the potential of the intellectual community associated with Tallinn University and to sustain and intensify its activity through publishing high-level academic literature.

The chief academic board consisting 18 prominent specialists directs, coordinates and consults with the University Press. Every series has an editorial board, which sometimes includes foreign members in order to assure the high quality of publications from an international perspective. An important task of the editorial board is to select experts to review the submitted texts. Constant quality control through peer reviews ensures that only worthwhile work is published under our trademark.

Tallinn University Press publications have been divided into three categories with a common design and colour scheme that echoes and distinguishes the various academic areas of the university. This provides every publication with a common look and feel that reflects the whole, yet respects the identity of every individual publication.

We strive to make effective use of the university’s intellectual resources,  we collaborate with the TLU institutes to locate potential texts, and we integrate skilled translators and editors from the university into the publishing process. We believe that this synergy makes a positive contribution to the Estonian intellectual sphere.

We aim to ensure that our books reach the readers: our publications should be stocked in academic bookshops both in Estonia and abroad, and information about our services should be available in the academic press. Although we do not operate for profit, our activities have to be financially sustainable. Therefore, we strive to limit our expenses in order to make our books accessible.

We seek to realise our potential in the Estonian academic and publishing sphere, and to support the mission of Tallinn University to be an intellectual centre that provides knowledge to readers within and beyond the university.
